It’s highly disconcerting that Britain is set to lose one of the last bastions of its sovereignty and effectively relinquish control of her borders under a common EU asylum policy.  Especially so when the Lisbon Treaty is pushed through.

The fact that allocation of asylum seekers is to be based on the population means that Britain will have to shoulder a large part of the responsibility. Britain’s already oversized population is to a large part due to immigration to date. This is a country that already has the same population as France, despite being four times smaller.

Rather than allowing us to state the obvious – that we are speeding headlong towards extreme over-capacity – this will now ludicrously be used as the main reason to force us to take in even more!

We have an internationally recognized culture and Universal language and are already an asylum seekers’ first choice destination.

Open border policy in Europe already disregards the 1951 Convention of Refugees that states someone must claim asylum in the first safe country they get to.

We have received European immigrants in their millions and are no doubt set to receive even more as the EU considers new membership applications.

Sadly the immigration debate has now become obtusely related to matters of acceptance and to state the simple fact that the country is full to bursting is often too eagerly translated into xenophobia. Britain had good reasons to be one of only two EU members prior to the 2004 enlargement that did not sign the 1990 Schengen Convention. We are an island, and by sheer logic, we have a limited capacity.
